Press-on nails can look like a fresh salon manicure, but only if they stay on. Most sets that pop off early fail for the same few reasons: oily nails, the wrong size, or water too soon after applying. Here are eleven simple habits that help a set last up to two weeks, plus how to take it off so you can wear it again.
Before you apply
1. Start with clean, dry, oil-free nails
Wash your hands, dry them fully, then wipe every nail with an alcohol prep pad. Hand cream, cuticle oil and natural skin oil are the most common reason press-ons lift at the edges.
2. Push back cuticles and buff lightly
Gently push cuticles back so the press-on sits on nail, not skin. A few light strokes with a file or buffer removes shine and gives glue something to grip. Do not over-buff; you only want to remove the gloss.
3. Size every finger before you glue
Lay out all ten nails and test each one. The press-on should cover the nail from side wall to side wall without touching skin. If you fall between sizes, pick the larger one and file the sides. A nail that is too narrow lifts at the corners within a day or two.
4. Choose glue or tabs for your plans
Nail glue is the choice for a week or longer. Adhesive tabs are kinder to natural nails and easy to swap, so they suit a weekend, a wedding or a party. Our handmade sets include both, so you can decide per occasion.
While you apply
5. Use a thin, even layer of glue
Put a small drop on your natural nail and a thin layer inside the press-on. Too much glue floods the cuticle; too little leaves air pockets that let water in.
6. Press at an angle, then hold 15 to 20 seconds
Place the press-on against the cuticle first, then roll it down toward the tip to push out air. Hold firm pressure on the center and sides for 15 to 20 seconds.
7. Keep hands dry for the first two hours
Glue keeps curing after it feels set. Skip dishes, showers and hand washing with hot water for about two hours.
Day to day
8. Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning
Long soaks in hot water and cleaning sprays soften glue. Gloves add days to a set.
9. Use your knuckles, not your nail tips
Opening cans, peeling labels and typing hard with the tips put leverage on the nail. Use the pad of your finger or a tool instead.
10. Fix a lifting nail early
If an edge starts to lift, dry it, add a tiny drop of glue under the edge and press for 15 seconds. Waiting lets water in and the whole nail comes off.
Removing and reusing
11. Soak, never pry
Soak your fingertips in warm soapy water with a few drops of oil for several minutes, then gently lift from the side with a cuticle pusher. Prying can peel layers off your natural nail. Clean old glue off the inside of each press-on, let it dry and store the set in its box so you can wear it again.
Sets that make it easier
Handmade gel press-ons with a curved, snug fit tend to stay on longer than thin, flat plastic sets. If you want to practice these tips this season, try the brown chrome French tip and tortoiseshell set for everyday fall wear, or the caramel plaid and 3D bow set. Each kit comes with 10 nails, 2 tubes of glue, adhesive tabs, a mini file, a cuticle pusher and an alcohol prep pad, and you can choose XS to L or a custom size in millimeters. Every set is handmade to order in 1 to 4 business days and ships from Vietnam, with delivery to the US in about 7 to 12 business days; peak season can add up to a week. See our shipping policy.
